Institute of Water Magazine Article: Making water investment count - why erosion protection must be central to infrastructure spending

The UK water sector is entering a once-in-a-generation investment cycle. But are we designing for the conditions ahead - or the conditions behind us? The latest issue of the Institute of Water magazine features an article by Roger Smith, Managing Director of Hesselberg Erosion Protection.
Water companies are collectively committing around £88bn through the Asset Management Plan (AMP8), the opportunity is clear. Yet climate projections point to more intense rainfall, higher flows and increased erosion risk across critical assets.
If erosion protection is treated as an afterthought, we risk shortening asset life and increasing long-term cost.
Designing for future hydraulic loading, not historic norms, is essential to making this investment count.
