Engineered erosion solutions for the UK’s most demanding water environments.

From dams and reservoirs to waterways and coasts, we protect infrastructure where land meets water. The UK's waterways continually face challenges including wave attack, scour, undermining, settlement, shifting sediment and water ingress. Our asphalt systems are cost effective, can be installed quickly and have been designed to flex in tandem with protecting and supporting flora and fauna. They have also demonstrated lifespans of 50 years.

Asphalt revetments provide a robust, flexible armour that absorbs wave energy and resists scour. They are also proven against waves up to 6m.

At Harwich and Shoeburyness, these systems delivered long-term protection where concrete blocks had failed.

Dams & reservoirs

Dams & reservoirs

Many UK dams are over a century old and located in high, exposed environments. To ensure long-term safety, the upstream face must be able to withstand persistent wave attack. Open Stone Asphalt (OSA) provides a resilient, low-maintenance solution for strengthening ageing upstream faces. At Abberton Reservoir, OSA was used as part of a scheme that increased capacity by 58%. At Megget Reservoir, asphalt grouting has delivered 28 years of zero-maintenance performance.

Waterways & flood storage

Waterways & flood storage

High water flows and overtopping expose riverbanks, channels and flood storage areas to scour and erosion. Asphalt systems like OSA, LSA and asphalt-filled geomats create flexible revetments that are proven in flows of up to 8.5 m/s. At the Leigh Flood Storage Area, asphalt replaced concrete blocks - cutting embodied carbon while improving resilience.

Harbour structures, quay walls and berths face scour and impact risks in confined marine environments. Asphalt mattresses and grouted rock systems provide rapid, diver-safe installation and long-term reinforcement. By reducing required rock size and installation time, these methods improve safety and minimise operational disruption. At Rotterdam’s Vulcaanhaven and Baglan Bay, asphalt protection extended harbour performance while reducing diver hours.

Offshore pipelines and cables demand protection in harsh subsea conditions. As part of the Marine Mastic Ltd consortium, Hesselberg Erosion Protection developed Marine Mastic Granules — a patented product that improves coating efficiency by eliminating crushing, reducing heating time, and cutting manual handling risks. Over 40,000 tonnes were sold in its first year, setting a new industry standard.
